MOMENTS

Variations on a Moment

1
Maui, near Haiku –
clouds break against the mountain,
birds chant in falling rain

2
falling rain
chanting birds
clouds embrace the mountain

3
thoughts like clouds
break upon the mountain,
pouring rain, chanting birds

==================================================

chop words!
brevity is the soul
of this moment.

==================================================

city sidewalk
munching on French fries
grizzled crow

==================================================

sundown
a confusion of crows
the cawcawphony begins

==================================================

now playing
birdsong at dusk
music on the livingnet

==================================================

weeds in the garden flourish
unconcerned
their days are numbered

==================================================

neither the flypaper
nor my hand
keeps the fly
from its appointed buzz

==================================================

dilapidated birdbath
a flash, a splash –
a bird

(with apologies to Basho and his old pond)

==================================================

Could it be I’m falling in love?

1
I’m just a guy,
my head turns as she walks by,
I’m just a guy

2
Hopeless, Romantic

hopeless –
a romantic till the end –
a look, a smile, a lilting voice and dreams arise
I tell myself, “you’re too old,
too bald, too fat…”
no matter, dreams arise

3
never too old –
college town shop girl
smites heart with smile

4
Singapore —
older yang, younger yin,
for the pleasure of her company
there was no defense

5
once upon a valentine

all dreams of flowers
     (i love you more)
are nothing so much
     (than words can hold)
as reflections of your face
     (or heart can say)
caught in a smile

(with apologies to ee cummings)

6
She wanted me to write her a love poem.
I tried. I couldn’t. I didn’t know then:
She was the poem of my heart.

==================================================

only a while
do our lives last,
the ant on the counter . . .
and me

==================================================

at any moment
gone (perhaps)
splat like a fly

==================================================

after noon –
early cricket sings solo
before the choir arrives

==================================================

annoyed with a limitation of age,
I curse, then watch:
anger draining away

==================================================

bare branches soak in silence
broken once only —
the cry of a crow

==================================================

pleasure of age –
driving through orchards
excited by blossoms

==================================================

blossoms sway
lightly
after rain
a petal
then another
falling

==================================================

all jays
under heaven
squawk

==================================================

after two day blackout
refrigerator no longer hums
now roars

==================================================

Aging

1
point of no return:
the face in my mind
has wrinkles

2
birthday —
who looks in the mirror remains 35,
who looks back adds another year to the count

3
thinning light,
thinner hair –
winter

==================================================

shuffling across the street
ancient Chinese couple
long after light turns red

==================================================

traffic school–
affable cop on day off
shares tricks of trade
with violators

==================================================

inside the gift shop
two captive birds
sing for each other

==================================================

Imagining a death poem

it’s true!
I don’t wish I’d spent
more time at the office

==================================================

used Zen poems –
between book pages
the receipt of the first owner

==================================================

early morning —
tea leaves in the pot awaken
just before I do

==================================================

late night —
poems of tea-steeped masters
lighting the room

==================================================

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio…

qi gong grandmaster sits for photo
between her fingers
the lit cigarette
